How To Boost Traffic with Search Engine Submission

As every online business owner knows, the higher your website ranks in the major search engines, the more traffic you’re likely to see. And the more traffic you get to your website, the more sales you’re likely to make. Before we talk about how you can improve your standings in the search engine results pages, though, let’s take a minute to discuss how search engines rank websites in the first place.

Search engines use programs called spiders to explore or “crawl” the Web to record and index the content of every webpage that they come across. Then, when a user runs a search, the search engine compares the search term (keyword) against its indexed webpages and presents that user with a list of websites whose content appears to be relevant to the keyword they searched for.

One quick strategy for letting search engine spiders know your site exists and encouraging them to index it faster is to submit it. Of course, search engine spiders do get around to indexing most of the websites online eventually, but it’s better if you don’t just sit back and wait for them to get to you. It could take months before spiders get to your site, so you need to make it happen, instead of waiting for it to happen.

Almost all search engines offer a way for you to manually submit your website’s URL in order to alert the spiders to your presence and get them to visit and index your site. With these free site submission, or “AddURL” services, you can tell the search engines the location of each webpage you want to be crawled and indexed by spiders.

You can submit your site to the three main search engines here:
• Google: www.google.com/addurl.html
• Yahoo: http://submit.search.yahoo.com (Pick the “Submit your site for free” option)
• MSN: http://www.bing.com/docs/submit.aspx?FORM=WSDD2

Every search engine has its own submission process. Your best bet is to go to each submission page and read the guidelines listed there in order to learn what is involved with each one.

If you have more than one URL, you should submit the domain name that has your best keywords since this will increase the chances of you getting a higher search result ranking. As long as that page is linked to your other URLs, then the spiders will follow those links to your other pages and they will get indexed too.
